IBC hears concerns over LRFD specs
The introduction of the new LRFD specifications into US design codes could lead to bridges which are an uncomfortable ride for users, are more susceptible to collapse during construction, or suffer from rapidly disintegrating deck slabs, delegates at the Pittsburgh International Bridge Conference heard today. Martin Burke from consultant Burgess & Niple told his audience that he was concerned about some parts of the new specs which are currently being introduced into design offices. Burke recommended the retention of historical provisions for deflection and transverse bracing requirements, at least until there had been more research into flexible structures.
