Design work can now begin for a new crossing of the Likoni Channel in Kenya following Japan International Cooperation Agency's approval of a grant.
The Mombasa Gate Bridge will replace a busy ferry service across the 500m channel.
Kenya’s Ministry of Transport & Infrastructure’s grant from the Japanese agency follows a study completed in March 2015, which put the total investment for the project at approximately US$518 million. The study was prepared by Katahira & Engineers International, Oriental Consultants Global, Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation and Toyo Construction. Possible options in the report included an arch design with long spiral approaches.
