Well over one in ten bridges are in a poor condition, said Destatis.

Public expenditure on the construction of roads, bridges and tunnels increased by 40.2% from 2011 to 2020, Destatis found. It has put the value of roads of Germany’s roads in 2020 at US$464 billion. In the last 10 years, builders have been faced with significant price increases, it said. The prices of road construction operations in Germany rose by 29.1% from 2011 to 2020, with those for bridges increasing by 24.1% in the same period.

Destatis said that there is a huge strain on roads, bridges and tunnels in Germany. For this reason, they need to be constantly repaired and maintained or, as in the case of the Salzbachtal Bridge on the A66 motorway near Wiesbaden, they need to be demolished at short notice and reconstructed.
