The last sections of a cable-stayed bridge which links the cities of Ho Chi Minh and Can Tho, in the south of Vietnam were joined on Saturday.

The Vietnamese prime minister Pham Minh Chinh urged contractors to keep working on the finishing touches of My Thuan 2 Bridge to ensure it can open fully later in the year (link opens in new tab). The Vietnamese state funded the bridge, which lies parallel to the existing My Thuan Bridge.

My Thuan 2 was funded entirely by the state to the tune of US$204 million. Project management, as well as design and build, were all domestic.
