Minister Mark Bailey said the Bill Fulton Bridge duplication project would improve safety and traffic flow by removing a pinch-point on one of Cairns’ key arterial roads and providing control at a busy intersection.

More than 30,000 motorists used the Cairns Western Arterial Road every day. There are currently regular traffic jams as the bridge has just two lanes but is served by four lanes of highway on both sides of Freshwater Creek.

Bailey said the project will be one of the first to be delivered under the state government’s US$138 million Significant Regional Infrastructure Projects Program, part of the US$1.53 billion State Infrastructure Fund.

The tender is expected to be awarded in October with construction starting before the end of the year.
